Wetting hair before application of these products can cause dilution of the treatment and is generally not advised. Lice are also capable of holding their breath under water, making it difficult for the solution to penetrate the lice. Make sure to read all package instructions before using any lice removal product.

While most available treatments will kill lice, they are not able to remove all of the eggs and therefore require second treatments, usually after 7-10 days, to kill the newly-hatched lice.

After the lice treatment has been applied, it is important to carefully comb out nits and eggs. This step is crucial as most eggs and nits are attached securely to the hair and cannot be washed out, leaving them behind to hatch and create a future infestation.

You don't need to discard all items that have come in contact with the infected family member, but it is advisable to thoroughly clean these items.
